Henry Hughes
Born in Port Gibson, Mississippi on April 17, 1829, Hughes graduated from Oakland College and became a widely known sociologist and apologist for slavery. He authored a number of books and other publications.
Hughes became captain of H company of the 12th Mississippi in March 1861, rising to become colonel by November. He died in Port Gibson on October 3, 1862 of inflammatory rheumatism.
Hughes is known as the "First American Sociologist."
