John Warner Lyell
Born in West Moreland County in 1838, Lyell graduated from VMI in 1859. He became captain of D company of the 47th Virginia in June 1861 and was promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 1, 1862.
Lyell lost his arm in the fighting at Weldon Railroad on August 19, 1864. He retired to the Invalid Corps in December. After the War, he served on the VMI faculty and as a Washington DC merchant. Lyell died in Washington on October 16, 1902.
