William H. Asbury Speer
William H. Asbury Speer was killed while temporarily commanding Lane's North Carolina brigade during the Petersburg Campaign.
Born on July 6, 1826, Speer was from Yadkin County, North Carolina. He enlisted as captain of Company I of the 28th Regiment in August 1861. Although captured as "Slash Curch" on May 27, 1862, he was back to be promoted to major on November 1, 1862. He was promoted to colonel on July 8, 1864. Speer was wounded at both Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
In August 1864, Speer took temporary command of Lane's brigade. While in command he was mortally wounded when a shell struck his head. He died on August 29, 1864.
